There were seven American Indian students enrolled in Point Isabel ISD schools in the 2022-23 school year, 40% more than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Point Isabel ISD schools welcomed 1,930 students during the 2022-23 school year. Among them, American Indian students comprised 0.4% of the student body to be one of the least represented ethnicities in the district.

Point Isabel ISD roughly covers schools within Cameron County and has a main office in Port Isabel.

Among the five schools in Point Isabel ISD schools, Garriga Elementary School recorded the highest enrollment of American Indian students in the 2022-23 school year, with a total of three students.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they’re offering better education for more Texas students.
