Willacy County schools enrolled 2,253 students who identified as being at risk during the 2021-22 school year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

This is an 8.6% increase over the previous school year.

Of the 3,939 students enrolled in Willacy County schools, 57.2% of them are considered to be at risk.

Willacy County had the 103rd highest number of at-risk students among Texas counties.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they’re offering better education for more Texas students.
