WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to block President Biden’s student loan relief program.
“Last week’s decision will negatively impact the lives of millions of Americans in my home state of Texas, and tens of millions of Americans nationwide, all who have some form of student loan debt.
In fact, there are $1.75 trillion dollars in total student loan debt, and the average owed per borrower is near $30,000.
It’s clear that where education should be used to open doors to economic freedom, it is instead blocking the way for many to grow and financially prosper.
Many Americans cannot afford to buy homes, start a family, or own a business because they are burdened with overwhelming debt. Student loan debt often disproportionately impacts Hispanics and other people of color who on average take on double the amount of student loans than their white counterparts.
This student loan relief program would have provided a lifeline to many Americans who are financially underwater. It had the potential to change millions of lives across the country for the better.
We are a country that believes in opportunity, and we should welcome the desire to better oneself through education by opening doors and not closing them shut. We cannot and will not give up on student debt relief.”
