WASHINGTON, D.C. – On June 27, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has awarded the City of Brownsville a $4,738,886 million federal grant through the Federal Transit Administration’s Low-and No-Emission program to support the procurement of hybrid electric buses. This funding was made possible by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which Congressman Gonzalez helped enact last Congress.

“This funding paves the way for a modern fleet of buses in Brownsville,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “The grant is a direct result of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and is another example of how Democrats are continuing to deliver for Americans. These newer vehicles will not only be better for our environment but will also create jobs to build, service, and operate the new fleet and expand access to public transit in Brownsville.”

“As the largest transit provider of the Rio Grande Valley, serving over 1 million people annually, we thank the USDOT,” said Brownsville Mayor John Cowen. “The City of Brownsville will be able to modernize its aging BMetro fleet and better serve our growing community.”

The grants offered by USDOT were part of a competitive program awarded to only 125 communities across the country. A total of $1.7 billion was awarded nationwide. The grants also fund workforce development initiatives and registered apprenticeships to support the creation of good-paying jobs.
