WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) released the following statement on the 11thanniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“Dreamers are doctors and nurses, teachers, veterans, servicemembers, small-business owners, and much more. These are folks who came here as children and have lived here for almost their entire lives. They pay their taxes, give back to their communities, and are essential parts of our country as clearly demonstrated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since its inception, the DACA program has provided more than 800,000 undocumented immigrants the opportunity to go to school or find employment without fear of deportation. In short, this program has afforded many the chance to live the American Dream by bettering themselves through hard work and determination.  We must ensure this lawful program continues to weather legal challenges.

However, on the 11th anniversary of the DACA program, Congress has yet to enact legislation that provides permanent protections and a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients. Congress cannot allow Dreamers, of which more than 100,000 live in Texas alone, to exist in a state of limbo. I stand with our Dreamers and call on my colleagues to act now and modernize our immigration system so that DACA recipients can continue to live in the only place they call home.”
