Washington, D.C. – On May 11, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) released the following statement regarding his vote against H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act:
“H.R. 2 is a political messaging tool that House Republicans are using as proof that they accomplished something. The fact is that H.R. 2 would resume the construction of an ineffective wall, restrict funding for non-governmental organizations who provide essential services to border communities and cripple the agriculture industry by making E-Verify mandatory.”
“I urge my colleagues to instead join me in sending my bill H.R. 2946, the Safe Zones Act of 2023, to President Biden’s desk. My bill would relieve the strain on our border by codifying the Biden Administration’s regional processing centers or “safe zones” and remove cartels from the equation.”
“We need legislation that secures our borders, modernizes our immigration system, supports border communities and treats migrants with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
