BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – On Monday, May 8th Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) released the following statement regarding the expiration of the federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) and the end of Title 42.

“Last week I had the opportunity to meet with Secretary Mayorkas and local Customs and Border Protection leadership in Brownsville. I applaud Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector Chief Gloria Chavez for her work to stand up Camp Monument and for both her and Port Director Tater Ortiz’s continued partnership with the City of Brownsville and other local organizations,” stated Congressman Gonzalez.”

“While I am grateful that the Administration has announced that it will establish processing centers in Latin America and deliver funding for key partners like the cities of Brownsville and McAllen and Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, I remain concerned that our precarious immigration system is already stretched beyond its capacity. Until we have the proper infrastructure in place to handle the inevitable influx of asylum seekers in a humane and orderly way, I urge President Biden to extend Title 42.”
