BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – On May 9, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) announced the allocation of $38,254,543 million in funding from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program-Humanitarian (EFSP-H) Program through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
“It’s past time for Federal resources to be allocated to our community. It shouldn’t be incumbent upon our local governments and organizations to bear the brunt of the financial burden as border communities,” stated Congressman Gonzalez. “I am pleased by the recent efforts put forth by the Biden Administration to mitigate the impact of the influx of migrants at our Southern Border, but we can do more.”
This funding was approved through Fiscal Year 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act, which Congressman Gonzalez voted for. The EFSP-H Program will allocate over $332.5 million in funding to 35 local governments and service organizations to help support DHS’s multi-agency plan to manage increased encounters at the Southern Border as the Title 42 public health order lifts.
Entities in South Texas that will receive EFSP-H funding are as follows:
· $13,165,000 for the Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley
· $6,219,543 for the City of Brownsville
· $5,705,000 for the City of McAllen
