WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34), a member of the House Financial Services Committee, released the following statement, calling on President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to engage in meaningful conversations to lift the debt ceiling:
“House Republicans’ legislation is disgraceful. Speaker McCarthy needs to stop holding the American economy hostage jeopardizing the full faith and credit of the United States. We cannot afford a replay of the 2011 standoff – our country’s closest brush with default in recent history. Defaulting on our debts would have severe ramifications for our country and our community in South Texas. Over 70,000 families in the 34th Congressional District of Texas would see a disruption in Social Security benefits and 300,000 Medicare, Medicaid and Veteran Affairs insurance recipients would be at risk of losing their health benefits.
“All parties need to come together in good faith and start delivering results for the American people. The American economy is one of the strongest and most resilient in the world and we stand to weaken our stance on the international stage if we cannot break the gridlock.
“I stand ready to work with my Congressional colleagues to pass a clean debt ceiling bill, as we have done in past Administrations and Congresses, that will allow us to get back on track and deliver for the American people and South Texas.”
