City of Harlingen issued the following announcement on Nov. 2.
The redevelopment project that turned the Baxter Building into one of the most coveted living spaces in Harlingen is now turning heads throughout Texas. Downtown Harlingen’s Baxter Lofts Restoration project has been selected as the winner for this year’s Texas Downtown Association President’s Awards in the over 50,000 population category.
The Texas Downtown Association (TDA) is an independent, statewide nonprofit organization that represents cities and towns of all sizes, economic development corporations, chambers of commerce, local associations, small businesses, and individuals. Each year during the annual conference, TDA recognizes outstanding projects, places, and people that contribute to downtowns across the state.
This year, 104 entries were submitted in 11 different categories and the Baxter Lofts Restoration Project was one of four finalists for the award.
Opened in 2019, the Baxter Lofts gave new life to a historical building that had been empty and deteriorating for more than 30 years. MRE Capital invested millions of dollars to restore and redevelop the building that for more than 50 years served as the tallest high-rise in the Rio Grande Valley. Located at the corner of A and Jackson Streets in Downtown Harlingen the Baxter Lofts features 24 apartments, a workout area, an office/work area, and a community room.
