City of Harlingen issued the following announcement on Dec. 10.
The City of Harlingen has two Financial Assistance Programs to help residents who lost income due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Both programs still have funds available to help Harlingen residents. The programs are funded through the CARES Act COVID Relief allocations made available to the City.
Harlingen residents whose income was affected from March 1, 2020, through December 30, 2020, may qualify for up to three months of assistance for utility payments including water/sewer, gas, electric, as well as, rent, and mortgage payments.
The first program is being administered through Loaves and Fishes and is open to all Harlingen residents. Loaves and Fishes can be reached by calling (956) 423-1014.
The second program is geared toward the unique needs of low and moderate-income persons. To qualify, the annual income cannot exceed current HUD income limits as stated in the chart below.
This program is being administered through the City’s Community Development Block Grant Office and applicants should call (956)216-5180 to find out what documents are needed to fill out an application.
Harlingen City Manager Dan Serna says both programs still have money available to help residents who find themselves in need. “Yes, we do still have money available to help our residents. These are grants and they don’t have to pay them back so I hope they take advantage of these programs.”
Again, if approved for one of these grants, the money does not need to be paid back to the City.
