There were 15 African American students enrolled in San Benito CISD schools in the 2022-23 school year, 114.3% more than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that San Benito CISD schools welcomed 9,354 students during the 2022-23 school year. Among them, African American students comprised 0.2% of the student body to be one of the least represented ethnicities in the district.

San Benito CISD roughly covers schools within Cameron County and has a main office in San Benito.

Among the 21 schools in San Benito CISD schools, San Benito High School recorded the highest enrollment of African American students in the 2022-23 school year, with a total of two students.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they’re offering better education for more Texas students.
