As communities along the U.S.-Mexico border struggle with the extension of the border closure, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. said the restrictions are hitting both businesses and families hard.
Treviño recently told The McAllen Monitor that even as Texas is reopening, the economic effect from the continued closure is holding back border communities.
“Sales tax is being impacted, obviously tourism, and everything else that we would normally rely on during this time of year,” he said.
Since the news conference where Treviño spoke, the Department of Homeland Security has further extended the restrictions through July 21. While Treviño acknowledged that Mexicans on non-essential travel could potentially carry the coronavirus, the virus is already present on both sides of the border.
“If the rest of the state and the rest of the country is reopening, why should the border be singled out for that reason?” he asked.
