CITY OF HARLINGEN: Seventh Confirmed COVID-19 Case in Cameron County

City of Harlingen issued the following announcement on March 24 

Cameron County Public Health has received confirmation that a 40 year-old male from Rio Hondo has tested positive for COVID-19. The individual is currently under home isolation. This is the seventh COVID-19 case in Cameron County.  The individual did not report any recent travel outside of Cameron County. 

"Based on the information we have  received thus f,ar,  the individual has no known exposure through travel or contact with another case," stated Esmeralda Guajardo, Health Administrator. "We are continuing our investigation to identify if this is a case of community transmission."

Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino, Jr. ordered a Shelter in Place for all Cameron County residents that goes into effect tonight at midnight. "Now that we have a possible community-acquired case, it is more important than ever that the         public shelter in place as it will assist us in the efforts to minimize the exposure to the         community,” stated Judge Trevino. 

As part of the COVID-19 action response plan, Cameron County Public Health is conducting the epidemiological investigation to identify others who may have been exposed and test the individuals showing symptoms. Cameron County Public Health will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they are received.

Cameron County continues to emphasize the importance of following prevention methods:

  • Practice physical distancing and keep your distance of 6 feet from others.
  • If you are sick, call your doctor and home isolate yourself.
  • Do not go outside the home unless it is absolutely necessary.
  • Practice good hygiene practices for everyday prevention measures, including frequent  hand-washing.
  • Covering when coughing or sneezing
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
