Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, a U.S. Congressman representing Texas’s 34th district, recently used his social media platform to address legislative concerns and announce upcoming constituent services in San Benito.
On August 15, 2025, Gonzalez posted a critique of pending legislation, stating: “Let’s call the Big, Ugly Bill what it is—a cold and calculated attempt to strip South Texans of their hard earned benefits, healthcare, and our children access to nutritious meals, sometimes the only food they receive a day.”
In subsequent posts on August 17, 2025, Gonzalez informed constituents about an outreach event. He wrote: “Team Gonzalez will be hosting Neighborhood Hours this Tuesday, August 19th, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. CT in the Old AT&T building located in the City of San Benito. If you are experiencing any issues with a federal agency, we’re here to help! https://t.co/901bSGQAJe” The announcement was also shared in Spanish: “El equipo del Congresista Gonzalez organizará Horarios de Vecindad este martes, 12 de agosto, de 1 p.m. a 5 p.m. (hora central) en el edificio antiguo de AT&T en la cuidad de San Benito. ¡Si tiene algún problema con una agencia federal, estamos aquà para ayudarte! https://t.co/LpN4OGDZic”
Gonzalez has maintained his seat through several election cycles. In the most recent general election held in 2024, he won against Mayra Flores with approximately 51.3% of the vote compared to her 48.7%. In the previous cycle in 2022, he also defeated Flores with a margin of nearly nine percentage points.
These statements and events come amid ongoing debates over federal policy impacts on South Texas communities.
