CITY OF HARLINGEN: To Hold Virtual Groundbreaking for Major Drainage Improvement Project

Groundbreaking

City of Harlingen issued the following announcement on Dec. 7.

The 9th and 13th Street Drainage Improvement Project is about to get underway.  The project is set to increase stormwater capacity as it moves southward toward the Arroyo Colorado.  It will also help improve stormwater run-off.  These improvements were identified in the City’s 2008 Master Drainage Plan.  This is a large project that calls for the removal of the existing storm sewer drain pipes and replacing them with 48-inch reinforced concrete pipes.  Fourteen manholes and 52 inlets will also have to be removed and replaced.

The cost of this project is estimated at $2.8 million which the City will share with FEMA and the Texas Water Development Board.  The City’s required match is $1.6 million.  Last week, TWDB awarded the City $1.3 million for this project reducing the City’s portion to $337,349 which has been allocated in the 2020-2021 Fiscal Year Budget.

To mark the beginning of the improvements, the City will hold a virtual Groundbreaking Ceremony on December 8, 2020, at 2 p.m.  The ceremony can be viewed on the City’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/harlingen.
